EUrocLIMA (in English)

EUrocLIMA is a cooperation programme on environment issues between the EU and Latin America. The EUrocLIMA programme is devoted especially to climate change issues and has the objective of "improving the knowledge of the Latin American politicians and scientific community about the problems and consequences of climate change, specifically with a view to integrating these topics in the strategies of sustainable development". It has three components: scientific-technical, socio-economic and institutional. The first one is coordinated by the JRC (Joint Research Centre) of the European Commission. One of its thematic areas relates to soils.

The main product in this thematic area will be the publication of the first Soil Atlas of Latin America and the Caribbean, aiming at presenting the relevance of soils as a natural resource and particularly its role in climate change the carbon cycle. Its publication is foreseen for 2013. It is expected that such a publication increases the visibility of this environment and key natural resource for decision-makers, Latin American public in general and particularly its education community. The Soil Atlas of Latin America and the Caribbean belongs to the series of Soil Atlas published by the JRC in recent years: Soil Atlas of Europe (2005), Soil Atlas of the Northern Circumpolar Region (2010), European Atlas of Soil Biodiversity (2010) and Soil Atlas of Africa (foreseen for 2012)

Other products of the process will be: the establishment of a regional network of institutions in charge of scientific information and/or decision-making about soils and the creation of new information on soils at a regional scale. The first activity of the thematic component soils was the kick-off meeting of the Soil Atlas of Latin America and the Caribbean (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 8-9 September 2010) held together with the First Regional Workshop of the Latin American node of the project GlobalSoilMap.net

EUrocLIMA (in Spanish)

EUrocLIMA es un programa de cooperación en materia de medio ambiente entre la UE y América Latina. El programa EUrocLIMA está dedicado especialmente al cambio climático y tiene como objetivo "mejorar el conocimiento de los políticos de América Latina y de la comunidad científica sobre los problemas y consecuencias del cambio climático, particularmente en vista a integrar estos temas en las estrategias de desarrollo sostenible". Tiene tres componentes: científico-técnica, socio-económica e institucional. La componente científico-técnica está coordinada por el JRC (Centro Común de Investigación, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Comisión Europea. Una de las áreas temáticas de dicha componente se refiere a los suelos.

El principal producto en este tema será la realización del primer Atlas de Suelos de América Latina y el Caribe, con vistas a presentar la importancia de los suelos como recurso natural y en particular su papel en el contexto del cambio climático y el ciclo del carbono. Su publicación está prevista para 2013. Se espera que un producto de este tipo permita aumentar la visibilidad para las administraciones, la sociedad latinoamericana en general y la comunidad educativa en particular de un ambiente y recurso natural clave como son los suelos. El Atlas de Suelos de América Latina y el Caribe se enmarca además en la serie de Atlas de Suelos realizados por el JRC en los últimos años: Atlas de Suelos de Europa (2005), Atlas de Suelos de la Región Circumpolar Norte (2010), Atlas Europeo de la Biodiversidad del Suelo (2010) y Atlas de Suelos de África (previsto para 2012)

Otros productos esperados del proceso son: el establecimiento de una red regional de instituciones responsables de la información científica y/o toma de decisiones sobre los suelos y la generación de nueva información sobre suelos a escala regional. La primera actividad de la componente suelos fue la reunión de lanzamiento del Atlas de Suelos de América Latina y el Caribe (Rio de Janeiro – Brasil – 9 y 10 de septiembre 2010), realizada conjuntamente con el Primer taller regional del nodo latinoamericano del proyecto GlobalSoilMap.net

1st Meeting on Soil Atlas of Latin America

The First Meeting on Soil Atlas of Latin America took place in Rio, Brazil at 6 - 10 September 2010. Find more information about the meeting (Presentations, discussions, links, etc).

Main Objectives of the Meeting:
- To present the GlobalSoilMap.net Partnership and to promote the development of the Node of Latin America and the Caribbean.
- To present the Project Soil Atlas of Latin America.
- To discuss how the countries of Latin America Node can participate in tdevelopment of Soil Atlas of Latin America.
- To demonstrate how the Node of Latin America of the GlobalSoilMap.net project can contribute to mitigate the impact of urgent subjects such as the global heating, the nourishing security, the water shortage, the reduction of the biodiversity, the deforestation and the demand energetics.
- To generate enthusiasm and to develop the necessary commitment for an active participation in the projects GlobalSoilMap.net and Soil Atlas of Latin America.
- To demonstrate a variety of DSM methods and techniques to the representatives of Node.
- To carry out the general planning and to establish a timetable of activities of the projects: Globalsoilmap.net and Soil Atlas of Latin America.
