Soil Datasets > Data > EIONET vs ESDAC
European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET) vs. European Soil Data Center (ESDAC)In the context of the development of the ESDAC by the JRC, considered as a focal point for soil related data in Europe, it was jointly decided by European Environment Agency (EEA) and Joint Research Centre (JRC) that all soil data management activities carried out by EEA in collaboration with EIONET will be transferred to the JRC. This decision took place at a "EIONET Workshop on Soil" on 18 September 2007 with representatives from DG ENV, EEA and JRC, together with representatives from the EIONET 'National Reference Centres for Soil' and members of the Steering Committee of the 'European Soil Bureau Network'.
In the near future, the JRC will expand this portal with soil data and information which EEA is currently holding.
For the time being, this site includes the information related to the last "EIONET Workshop on Soil" (September 2007) and provides the lists of the EIONET "National Focal Points" and the EIONET "National Reference Centres for Soil". These lists are synchronized with the ones published by EEA.
- EIONET National Focal Points (NFPs): are environmental organisations - represented by persons - appointed by the EEA member countries at the national level as primary links/contacts between the EEA and the national EIONET partners.
- EIONET Primary Contact Points for soil : are Lead Institution at National level that would be in charge of networking with all the competent National institutions related to the various soil data needs as identified by DG ENV and EEA.
- EIONET National Reference Centres for Soil (NRCs): are nominated by member and cooperating countries. They are nationally funded experts or groups of experts in organisations which are regular collectors or suppliers of environmental data at the national level and/or possess relevant knowledge of specific environmental issues, monitoring or modelling. NRCs operate in specific areas of environmental activity - for example soil.
- EIONET Data Collection - Technical Guidelines : The EEA and the European Commission DG Environment have identified soil erosion and decline in soil organic matter as priorities in relation to the collection of policy relevant soil data at European scale. In the context of its European Soil Data Centre activities and in response to EEA soil data requirements, the JRC is responsible for collection and management of European soil data in collaboration with EIONET members.
Data Collection on Contaminated Sites 2011 : The2011 EIONET request for data on contaminated sites requires the responding by EIONET members for Soil to a questionnaire following technical guidelines.- "EIONET Workshop on Soil" - 3&4 March 2009 - agenda and presentations
- "EIONET Workshop on Soil" - 18 September 2007 - agenda and presentations
