This section provides links to websites from where soil related datasets
at regional level could potentially be accessed and/or downloaded.
According to INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) principles,
public users should be provided with easy access to datasets at European, National,
Regional and local level. In this spirit, members of the European Soil Bureau
Network and staff from JRC are jointly identifying relevant data sets in Europe
and the modalities for accessing them. This effort is also relevant in the context
of the establishment of the European Soil Data Center(ESDAC) at JRC. See also the

Support Centre GIS-Flanders | Soil Map of Flanders | Since 1999 a digital version of the soil maps is available for the entire Flemish Region. It is a digital reproduction of the analogue soil maps that have been mapped between 1947 and 1973, without actualisation. In Belgium, the soil maps are based on two classification methods. Both systems are described and interpreted for each agricultural region in an attached document. The classification resulted in more than 4500 unique soil types for the Flemish region. The thematic use of the soil map in GIS-environment gives a wide range of possibilities. But for visualisation purposes the classification codes have been simplified to 40 classes. | Laura D’heer |

State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) | Niedersächsisches Bodeninformationssystem NIBIS® (Soil Informationsystem Lower Saxony) | Soil information systems incorporate data and data evaluation methods using several conceptual, logical, and physical models. Working with soil information systems tends to be rather demanding for users, because they hardly can be expected to be familiar with all the scientific and technical aspects of the system. For that reason, a layer of supporting functions has been introduced into NIBIS. These functions enable users to identify, to query, and to select the system contents, as well as to visualize results obtained, or to use evaluation methods. This way, it can be assured that data and methods are used only within their limits and where their applicability, or significance, resp. have been established. The supporting functions are linked to soil data and methods via metadata, which is mainly grouped into two logical units. North Rhine-Westphalia State Environment Agency | Soil Information System North Rhine-Westphalia | The information system provides data, methodology and information especially on soil contaminants with a view to practical soil protection in NRW. Central module is the Information System on Soil Contamination (FIS StoBo). Its prior objective is to offer an easy access to existing data and information. The system works on a database of about 60.000 soil sample analyses with particular regard to heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. Attended parameters influencing the availability are attached in some cases. The data are derived from several different investigations resulting in a heterogeneous data background, requiring specific tools for carrying out defined requests. Results can be visualized via tables or maps. Individual further processing is possible after downloading the data. Saxon State Agency for Environment and Geology | Digital concept soil map (BK-konz) of Saxony, Germany | The BK-konz is a general map based on older data. It was derived and combined from agricultural and forestrial site maps. The units from the BK-konz represent contours of regional agricultural and forestrial location types. The assignment of the pedological contents was carried out by expert knowledge. The encoding was essentially on the basis of the German soil mapping instructions (4th edition, Hanover 1994). The map is provided for the whole Saxony in the official topographical map sheet 1 : 25,000 for the free download. The data format is E00 from ESRI, readable also with current ESRI products. Geological, Seismic and Soil Survey Organisation | I suoli dell’Emilia-Romagna (The soils of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy) | The website (in Italian) is based on Google Earth technology and information on soil at different scales are available. The Google Earth map and the 3D models help to understand the geography of the soil information. With a simple click in the map you can open a "balloons" containing the basic info about the selected soil. The balloon it is a gate facing the world of the soil information of the Emilia Romagna through web links and pictures. The maps are available for the Google Earth application and for the Google Earth plug-in inside a web browser (Firefox, Explorer, Safari, etc.) at the scales 1:1.000.000, 1:500.000, and 1:250.000 for the whole region, 1:50.000 for the plain and 1:10.000 for some experimental farms.
