Soil Resources of Europe, second edition

This volume provides the most comprehensive summary yet attempted of the current position regarding the detail and availability of soil information, particularly spatial data, at national and European levels. The first comprehensive summary of base-line soil resource data in Europe emerged from a meeting of the Heads of European Soil Surveys and Soil Data Centres, held at Silsoe in 1989 (EUR 13340 EN). A second meeting of this group took place in Orleans in December 1994 (EUR 16371 EN). The first edition of the Soil Resources of Europe (EUR 18991 EN) summarises the status of soil survey, the application of soil information and extent of monitoring activities across Europe, based on papers presented at the European Soil Bureau Advisory Committee meeting held in Silsoe 21-22 April 1998.

This second edition of the Soil Resources of Europe incorporates chapters on all the EU Member States, including those that joined the Union in May 2004, current Candidate Countries and a number of Neighbouring Countries that have close relations with the EU. It includes a contribution on the recent activities of the European Soil Bureau Network, sponsored by the European Commission DG Joint Research Centre, and a summary of the current position of soil survey, soil monitoring and soil information management in Europe. Its appearance is timely as an invaluable source of reference to underpin the ongoing Soil Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection initiated recently by the European Commission.
