Soil Atlas of Europe Wins Prestigious Golden Sickle Prize

The Soil Atlas of Europe, produced by the MOSES Action of the IES Soil and Waste Unit, in collaboration with the European Soil Bureau Network, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Sickle prize at the 2005 Agrokomplex International Agricultural and Food Fair recently held in Nitra in the Slovak Republic. Within the framework of the United Kingdom's Presidency of the European Union, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the European Soil Bureau Network and the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) are organising the public launch of the first ever SOIL ATLAS OF EUROPE.
Produced as a collaborative project by the JRC and a team of leading European soil scientists to help raise public awareness of the need to protect soil resources, this unique document explains the importance of soil to society and clearly shows how soil type and properties vary throughout Europe.
The Atlas will be launched by Lord Bach of Lutterworth, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Lords) for Sustainable Farming and Food at DEFRA on October 18th (10:00-13:00 hrs) at One Great George Street, Westminster, London . It would be a great pleasure if you would be able to join us at this important event.
