Soil Projects > ECALP(Ecopedol. Map of Alps) > Kick off Meeting 1/7/2004
During the 1st and 2nd of July the Meeting for Harmonization of Soil Information in the Alps was held in JRC, Ispra, Italy. This meeting was organized by JRC to analyze the problems of harmonization of soil information in the Alps. Representatives of most of the potentially involved soil survey institutions, operating at national or regional level, participated (see list of Attendances). A first session was about the background and the concerned general issues; a second one was centered on the project "Eco-pedological Map for the Alpine Territory" (see Agenda).
List of Presentations
July 1st, 2004
- ALPSIS Project: Luca Montanarella, JRC, illustrated the state of the work in the establishment of a European Soil Monitoring Network as a new component of the European Soil Information System. Such a network will be used not just to ensure soil protection itself, but as a measure of the effectiveness of other protection policies and as a tool for their improvement where necessary. This will require the set-up of interfaces to other sectors such as air, water, waste, forest, agriculture and climate change (The present version of the European 1:1Million soil database in the Alps)
- Web Portal to European Soil Database: The present version of the Web Portal to European Soil Database (data, documents, applications and projects) was presented by Panos Panagos and Marc VanLiedekerke, JRC
- Analysis of harmonization problems in the Alps: Ugo Wolf, Florence University, analyzed some of the problems encountered during the activities of an expert group charged of the so called "Harmonization of the Georeferenced Soil Database for Europe", scale 1:1 Million, all around the Alps. Multiple technical and organizational solutions were discussed. Among the basic starting points for a process of harmonization, Ugo Wolf suggested the use of point samples (i.e. soil profiles), their harmonization and grouping into sub-populations of the Alpine territory.
- Harmonization of Soil Information in the Alps: Nicola Filippi, JRC, observed the analogy between this "sub-populations" approach and the "Soil Regions" one, that was proposed by the Manual of Procedures for Georeferenced Soil Database for Europe, edited by the European Soil Bureau Scientific Committee
2nd July 2004
- INSPIRE Directive and its implications for the Soil community: Jean Dusart (JRC) illustrated the initiative for the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe: principles and legal framework, implementation and proposed calendar of execution of the related directive
- The Eco-pedological Map for the Alpine Region(Stefano Lucci, APAT, Italian Environment Protection Agency and Technical Services), The Ecopedological project of the Alps (Francesca Ferraro, Earth Sciences Dept., Milano University): the background and the actual approach to the "Ecopedological project of the Alps" was described. Taking into account the limited but reliable financial resources, the project gives the possibility of defining criteria and procedures, to be tested in some sample areas, preparing a prototype of the ecopedological map and database and creating a network among regional and national institutions aimed at setting on and updating a shared soil database, according to SOIA's tasks.
- The pilot area approach as a basis to develop a network: The pilot areas approach as a basis to develop the network was presented by Silvia Obber and Ialina Vinci (ARPAV, Environmental Agency of Veneto Region). Pilot areas requirements and formats to allow the exchange of data were proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of a pixel approach were analyzed too
- Ecopedological map of the Alpine Territory: Stefano Barbieri and Sara Zanolla (ERSA, Regional Agency for Rural Development, Soil Bureau) presented a cross-border example, concerning the "Friuli Venezia-Giulia - Slovenia" pilot area
Furthermore, discussions took place about the choice of four cross-border pilot areas: "Slovenia - Friuli Venezia-Giulia", "Austria - Veneto", "Switzerland - Lombardia" and "France - Piemonte". All the presentations can be downloaded here (67 MB)
