Data for the Soil Information System for the MARS Crop Yield Forecasting System (SINFO)
Soil data for Europe are used in the Crop Growth Monitoring System (CGMS) which is a part of the Mars Crop Yield Forecasting System (MCYFS).
In the current CGMS the Soil Geographical Data Base of Europe (SGDBE) at 1:1,000,000 version 3.1 is used (as part of the European Soil Database version-1). The MAGHREB countries, Turkey, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus are not covered in SGDBE version 3.1. For these countries, data from the FAO Digitised World Soil Map (DSWM) at 1:5,000,000 are used.
The JRC commissioned a consortium of external companies to develop a framework for incorporating in the CGMS a pre-decessor of version 4.0 of the SGDBE (the official SGDBE version-4.0 is part of in the European Soil Database version-2 ).
In the context of this project, dubbed SINFO (find a detailed description), various activities have taken place such as:
- the generation of soil parameters with the FAO soil map
- a check and update of WRB soil names
- the re-definition of new Soil Physical Groups and their parameters
- the re-definition of new Rooting Depth classes
- the re-evaluation of CGMS Suitability Criteria
- a new evaluation of Soil Suitability Criteria
- the rewriting the Pedotransfer Rules (PTR) for salinity, alkalinity and drainage according to the new nomenclature
The full and raw results of the project (data and documentation) are available to anyone after filling the online form. Instructions for download will then follow.
It is important to stress that these results have not been quality-checked yet against any QA/QC procedure external to the SINFO project itself.
Based on the project results, the JRC has compiled the EU-report 'New soil information for the Crop Growth Monitoring System' (EUR 22499 EN), available as one PDF or HTML.
