Miet Van Den Eeckhaut obtained a Master in Physical Geography at the Catholic University of Leuven in July 2002 with a master thesis on “Characteristics and controlling factors of gullies under forest: a case study from the Meerdaal forest”. In May 2006, she completed a Phd on “Spatial and temporal patterns of landslides hilly regions - the Flemish Ardennes”, funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders, at the same university. Between 2006 and 2009, she continued working at the Catholic University of Leuven as a post-doctoral researcher. Her research focused on landslides in Flanders, France (Champagne-Ardenne) and the Ethiopian highlands.

She joined the European Commission - Joint Research Centre in September 2009 as a post-doctoral researcher for a period of two years. During this period she will mainly work on the SafeLand project, an FP7 project, where she will focus on quantitative landslide risk assessment and detection and mapping of landslides using mainly optical remote sensing.
