Portrait: Gergely Tóth

Gergely Tóth is graduated in 1994 in soil science and agrochemistry at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Land Resources, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China. He than studied environmental sciences (MSc, 1996) and applied statistics (cert. 1997) at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary. He carried out his doctoral research (PhD, 2000) on the field of land evaluation at the Department of Soil Science, Georgikon Faculty of Agricultutral Sciences, University of Veszprém, Keszthely, Hungary.


His professional experiences include research and project coordination of land evaluation, soil conservation and land use planning, as well as teaching of soil science, land use planning, soil management and soil conservation in the following positions:

Research associate (1994-1995) at the department of soil science, Pannon Agricultural University (today: University of Veszprém), Keszthely, Hungary.

Research associate / young scientist (1995, 1996) in the Modeling Land Use Change in Europe and Northern Asia Project, International Institute for Applied Systems Analyses, Laxenburg, Austria.

PhD fellow (1999) at the Institute of Advanced Studies / United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan.

Researcher (1999-2002) and professor associate (2002-2005, part-time) at the Department of Land Use and Soil Management, University of Veszprém, Georgikon Faculty of Agriculture.

Senior Research Scientist (2002-2005) at the Research Intitute for Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary.

He joined SOIL action in the Soil and Waste Unit of the Joint Research Centre in february 2005. His work is related to the development of the European System of Soil Data as a knowledge based system. He is collaborating with the relevant Commission services in charge of the development of the EU Thematic Strategy on Soils.
