| Hicham El-belrhiti is graduated in 2005 in Geophysics from Paris VII Denis Diderot University with a PhD. Thesis on Aeolian processes. He received in 2001 a Master in geochemistry from Faculté des sciences, Ibn Zohr University (Morocco) and in 1999 a bachelor in Environment science from Faculté des sciences et Techniques d’Errachidia, Moulay Ismail University (Morocco). His scientific interests lie in the general area of environment, soil sciences and geology, which he probe primarily with experiments and after on modeling and field measurements. In his earlier studies and research, he has been interested by the pollution of water and ground water. So the subject of his dissertations was respectively the pollution of khettera’s water (ground traditional galleries of water build several centuries ago) and the pollution of ground water by landfills. Over the last few years he has developed particular interest on soil physics, sediment transport and geomorphology. During his PhD, he studied morpho-dynamics of barchan dunes and the physics of Aeolian transport. In particular he demonstrates the existence of intrinsic instabilities of barchans that lead to nucleation of waves on their surface and finish by the ejection of small dunes. In the same period, he has been interested also by the sound emitted by spontaneous avalanches of sand dunes commonly known as song of dunes. He worked also for his first and second post-doctoral position respectively in France and Portugal in modeling sediments transport and mapping the change on beaches morphology. Finally before joining the JRC, he worked as a consultant for a private company in Morocco specialized in soil physics. Since March 2009 he joined European Commission – Joint Research Centre, the Institute for Environment and Sustainability, Land Management and Natural Hazard Unit, Soil Action as a Grantholder.
