Team - Action SOIL > Olivier Dewitte

Portrait: Olivier Dewitte

Olivier Dewitte graduated in 1999 as a geographer from University of Liege (ULg) in Belgium. During his master studies he specialized in geomorphology and climatology. From Oct 1999 to Oct 2006, he was employed as a teaching assistant at the Department of physical geography (ULg). During that period he first completed in 2001 an inter-university master degree in cartography and remote sensing (University of Liege, Free University of Brussels, Catholic University of Louvain). In March 2006 he completed a PhD in geomorphology (Faculty of Sciences, ULg). During his researches he gained experience in digital photogrammetry (Ministry of Equipment and Transport, Walloon Region (Belgium) as well as in GIS spatial modelling of geological processes (Spatial Data Analysis Laboratory, Geological Survey of Canada (Ottawa)). Before joining JRC, he was employed as researcher at ULg in different projects dealing with mapping earth surface processes and regional climatology.

He joined the European Commission - Joint Research Centre in December 2008 as a post-doctoral researcher for a period of three years.

His research interests are in earth surface processes and quantitative geomorphology at different scales (landslides, soil erosion), spatial statistics and cartography (susceptibility and hazard modelling of geomorphologic processes, Digital Terrain Model analysis), remote sensing applied to geomorphology, and climatology. His role in SOIL action concerns soil mapping in general with a particular focus on Africa. He is also in charge of establishing the African Soil Bureau.
