The strategy for version numbering is as follows:

Example:

    1.2.3.4, 30/06/1998

    | | | |      -> updated at each new version
    | | | -> incremented when minor updates of geometry or attribute
    | | -> incremented when border harmonisation takes place
    | -> incremented when a new country is added (the database extent changes)
    -> incremented when the database structure changes

. Increment of the third or fourth numbers requires that models using previous
  data be rerun, and/or maps be redrawn.
. Increment of the second number requires that map extents, scales and/or
  sizes might need revision in cartographic visualisation tools.
. Increment of the first number requires that models or tools using previous
  data be revised to account modified database structure and then rerun.
. Increment of any of the first three numbers implies that the subsequent
  numbers have been reset to 0 (e.g. 1.2.3.4 -> 1.3.0.0).
. Version date is only indicative.
