The European Soil Database (ESDB) contains four discrete datasets:
- the Soil Geographical Database of Eurasia at scale 1:1,000,000 (SGDBE)
- the Pedotransfer Rules Database (PTRDB)
- the Soil Profile Analytical Database of Europa (SPADBE)
- the Database of Hydraulic Properties of European Soils (HYPRES)
This release of the database is freely available to the public and contains a 1km raster version of the vector based soil geometry.
All original data are documented on ESDB CD-ROM (European Soil Database), which refers to the CD-ROM containing the original data.
The principal difference between this public on-line release and the original CD-ROM data is that the geometric components of the soil map of Europe (soil polygon shapefiles and coverages) have been substituted by a raster (grid) called soil_smu_1k, with cell sizes of 1km x 1km. Each cell carries the Soil Mapping Unit (SMU) code of the underlying soil polygon.
